Otoplasty (Ear Surgery) in Charlotte, NC
Having large or misshapen ears can be difficult as children are teased, and even some adults are ridiculed at times. Board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Klein and Dr. Kochuba, offers otoplasty (ear surgery) for children, adolescents, and adults living in Charlotte, Salisbury, Harrisburg, Concord and surrounding areas of North Carolina.
What is Otoplasty?
Otoplasty is a surgery that is performed on the ears. Dr. Klein and Dr. Kochuba performs the surgery on children between five and 14 years old, as this is generally when the ears are fully developed. They also recommend the surgery for adults who are unhappy with the shape and/or size of their ears.
Understanding why ear anatomy is important helps you know if it is the right cosmetic surgery for you. Like other facial features, the ears will either enhance or reduce facial balance. Any flaws with the ears become the focus of attention, and this can make anyone feel self-conscious. When this is coupled with remarks and teasing, the emotional impact becomes much more complex.
Benefits of Ear Surgery
As board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Klein and Dr. Kochuba performs ear surgery to help with:
- Ears that are too large for the head size
- Ears that protrude out from the head
- Ears that are not symmetrical
- Specific areas of the ears, such as the earlobes, that are too small or large
- Abnormalities in the shape of the ears
Who is the Ideal Candidate for Otoplasty?
Children should be at least five to 14 years old before having otoplasty. Adults can have the surgery at any time. Dr. Klein and Dr. Kochuba will discuss the outcome of your ear surgery during the consultation appointment.
What Do I Need to Do Before Ear Surgery?
We want you to be happy with the results of your otoplasty, so the best way to start is by scheduling a personal consultation with Dr. Klein and Dr. Kochuba. By using a patient-centered approach, they will listen to your concerns and describes how ear surgery will help you or your child.
How Long Does It Take to Perform Otoplasty?
Depending on the nature of your ear surgery, the procedure can take one to two hours for each ear.
What to Expect After Ear Surgery
The ears are wrapped with a compression bandage to help with healing. The most important aspect of your aftercare is to protect the ears from being injured. You will need to avoid activities that are strenuous or increase the risk of ear injuries for at least six weeks. You should not massage or manipulate your ears in any way as this can cause the cartilage to heal improperly.
Will I Have Scars After Getting Otoplasty?
The incisions for otoplasty are made behind the ears, so the scars are not visible. Initially, the scars will be pinkish in color. Over the first year, the scars change to a light brown or tan color and fade, but do not completely disappear.
When Will I See the Results?
You will need to wear the compression bandage for several weeks, so you will only be able to see the results during your follow-up appointments with Dr. Klein and Dr. Kochuba. Full healing can take six months to one year.
How Long Will the Results of Ear Surgery Last?
The results of otoplasty are mostly long-lasting.
How Much Does Otoplasty Cost in Charlotte?
When ear surgery is performed for cosmetic reasons, the cost is not covered by medical insurance. We will review your cost after the consultation appointment. For your convenience, we accept payment by cash, check and major credit card. Financing is available through CareCredit®.
