Do-It-Yourself plastic surgery.
Sounds too good to be true, right?
That’s because it is.Today, we are going to discuss the importance of contacting a board-certified plastic surgeon for all cosmetic procedures, while also informing you of the dangers of all DIY cosmetic procedures.
Unfortunately, due to the accessibility and affordability of DIY procedures, they are becoming more and more common…and are causing more problems, injuries, and deaths than ever. In fact, many are going as far as to order these non-FDA approved materials online, performing the procedures at home, rather than under a physician’s supervision. Cosmetic procedures performed outside of a board-certified plastic surgeon are incredibly dangerous, leading more often than not to serious health problems and, in severe cases, death.
You might have noticed the recent upsurge in the news regarding DIY plastic surgeries, or, more accurately, covering their aftermath. One woman, hoping to improve the size and shape of her buttocks, received silicone injections from a total stranger. The result? Searing pain and a near-death experience. Another ordered dermal fillers online. All it took was a simple search, click, and swipe of the card. After injecting the unknown product into her face, she was forced to seek treatment for infection. Dermatopathlogy results revealed that the dermal fillers she’d ordered online were were, in fact, low grade fiberglass!
Although it might seem convenient to skip the doctor’s office, nothing about DIY plastic surgery is convenient, especially when you consider the lifelong risks incurred by them.
In a recent article, Dr. Young Cho, a plastic surgeon in Houston, said the following regarding DIY plastic surgery: “When you start toying or injecting things into the body you can create a lot of damage that can be irreversible. Some of that damage can cost a lot more to you in the future, and in some cases it can even cost your life.”
